Update 10/17/22: Wiring

I wasn’t satisfied with the wiring in terms of reliability and serviceability. While rewiring the car, I took the opportunity to remove all switches, gauges and wiring from the dashboard and remove gauges for engine data I can display through TunerStudio. All controls, switches and warning lights are contained in a new center console, and I will use a small Android device on the steering column for engine and speed data. I installed a Leash Electronics relay board on the passenger side. In hindsight I could have used the generic inputs for the MS3Pro ECU to display fuel level and oil temperature data through TunerStudio but I have analog gauges in the center console and I’m not doing the wiring again, although it’s something I can change later.

To avoid electrical interference, I divided the engine harness into two sub-harnesses: one for sensor data and one for the outputs (injectors, coil, etc). I moved the engine ECU alongside the Leash relay board for better integration. With the new wiring I ensured the VVT and variable intake are both working. Those systems affect the engine’s volumetric efficiency (VE) so it’s important they are functional before further tuning.

I also wired in a battery cutoff solenoid. Previously, the starter lead was not fused or disconnected by the cutoff switch. Now there is only a 6″ section of battery cable before the cutoff solenoid which should reduce the likelihood of a massive short in an accident. The cutoff switch only carries several amps needed to energize the solenoid, not the full load required by the starter.

I’ll have a new dashboard bent from aluminum and paint the dash and center console with VHT wrinkle paint. Because the dash doesn’t hold any components and is supported by the center console, I can use a lighter gauge aluminum.

Once the wiring is complete, I’ll hook up the footwell cowl drains, install felt carpeting and make the interior a little more hospitable.
