Driving Log

8/28-8/29: (Brakes)
1″ master cylinder: pedal goes almost to floor without much stopping force. Changed brake bias to favor front, slight improvement but not much stopping force.
1.25″ master cylinder: pedal is very firm, even with vacuum assist. Travel and feel are similar to a production car but very little stopping force.
The 1.125″ master cylinder was in between—marginally more stopping power than 1.25″ MC but with longer pedal travel.
Brakes have been bled multiple times with over 4 quarts of fluid through system. Doesn’t seem like an issue with air in the system.
Still a little clutch chatter so I may have glazed the disk or flywheel before I fixed the throttle response.
Temporary hookup of power steering came loose last drive. Steering is still possible without assist, even with stickier tires but it’s very heavy. Much better with power assist.

8/21/22: (Check power steering, tires and brake pedal feel)
Power steering works very well. A little light above 40mph.
Still very little brake pedal feel. Pedal is firm but no bite. Replace pads with known compound.
Try disconnecting brake vacuum boost and compare feel with no assist.
Tires have some drone but feel more compliant. No loss of pressure.
Next time check steering return-to-center.
Car wanders very slightly. Try a few mm of toe in.
Clutch chatters if let out too quickly. Maybe result of abuse before fixing throttle action.

8/9/22: (Check throttle response and idle)
After cable routing changes, throttle modulation is good.
No changes to throttle or clutch required at this time.
Brakes are still vague with little feedback. Try a larger master cylinder?
I changed the target AFR for idle to be 13.5 which helped stabilize the idle–no stalling.
Ran the car up into the Hilltop neighborhood to put some load on the engine.
Steering is heavy. Install steering pump when bracket arrives.
Rattle in rear. Check that rear suspension is tight.
Rattle from passenger door window mechanism.
Install anti-glare film on rear view mirror and laptop screen.

8/3/22: (Check throttle response and idle)
The throttle response is a little quick off-idle.
Clutch pedal is a little numb but don’t go more than one size larger on the MC.
Brakes feel a little numb with too much pedal travel, but effective.
Car wanders a little. Steering wants to turn-in quickly around corners (opposite of self-centering)
Rattle in rear on larger bumps.
Need anti-glare for rear view mirror.
Engine sounds good. New air intake position is good.
AFR seems a little lean in many conditions. Check target AFR.
Warm up AFR went very lean after WE (warmup enrichment) correction stopped.
Engine feels a little hesitant to rev. Need to get VVT and variable intake flaps working.

7/17/22: (Drive to gas station)
Throttle response is much better. Possibly still too sensitive but need to fix idle.
Fix idle: engine often dies coming to a stop.
Squeaking from idler system somewhere, either alternator or timing belt
Not a lot of clutch feel. Might need a bigger master cylinder.
Glare from rear view mirror makes it almost unusable. Is anti-glare film available?
Lots of bounce and flex in front hood piece. Reinforce with fiberglass.
Intake noise drowns out most other sound. Move and build airbox.
RS4 motor mounts eliminated engine vibrations.

7/10/22: (First 10 miles)
Throttle response too quick
Not much feel in clutch point of engagement
Brakes stop very well but no feel for point of engagement
Steering is very heavy—two hands to turn the wheel when the car is stopped
Car tracks straight up to ~35mph
Car brakes straight from 35mph
Idle still a little unsteady after starting but evens out
Relatively supple ride with no body roll
Bumps didn’t seem overly harsh

Lot of glare in rear view mirror screen
Need hood hold down clips
No obvious leaks, no overheating
