I cut the front wheel arches and moved them forward 2″ so the wheels are centered in the bodywork without rubbing. I need to trim the front lower valance and quarter panel pieces to reflect the changes to the wheel arch location. I built a tilt mechanism and frame for the rear body. The body will have 8 attachment points to the frame and easily support any down force from the rear spoiler. The body frame will latch at the top with two bear-claw latches. Here are a few pictures to see where I’m at. Pinninfarina did an amazing job with the rather plain Scorpion. Due to the larger than stock diameter of the front wheels, I had to position the wheels slightly forward from the normal location otherwise the tires would rub on the chassis at full bump. I need to move the body wheel openings forward a corresponding amount because currently the tires are rubbing on the body. This has the benefit of reducing the front overhang. I changed the upper rear shock mounts using the new chassis tabs and adjusted the spring preload so that the chassis is sitting at the correct ride height. The new mount is made from 3/16″ steel. I have new Koni coil-over shocks for the front, replacing the Aldan American ‘hot rod’ shocks. The Koni 30 series front shocks match the rear and are revalvable and adjustable. The Koni front shocks are slightly longer than the Aldan shocks so I need to move the mounting bracket up about 2″ where it is welded to the sub-frame. I purchased new upper shock brackets for the front and rear. The new rear brackets will look nicer than what is currently there. I welded all the exhaust seams. It’s not my best looking welding but considering how many times I adjusted some of the tubes at least the welding is strong. The exhaust is painted with hi temp paint and installed with gaskets and copper coated flange nuts. The mufflers are supported by rubber isolators at the rear of the chassis. I’m wrapping the exhaust and then I will mount the polished stainless tips. Continue reading Update 5/3/15

I changed the collector/reducer from a ball style to a flange end. The flange style definitely seals better even though the stock headers have some sort of ball end. I installed the muffler turnouts and the exhaust tips. The tips are not welded yet as I need to trim the length. I keep wondering how many more times I’ll need to remove the exhaust assembly—at least one more time to finish welding a few spots, spray the exhaust with hi temp paint and wrap the tubes using DEI Titanium header wrap. Progress on the exhaust system. Two exhaust tips will exit the center cross pipe in conventional license plate location through the mesh grill in the body. I went with a solid cross pipe initially for ease of fabrication. The pieces are only tack welded together. I plan to remove them as a single assembly for welding and then weld exhaust hangers.
