Update 11/17/2013

I didn’t like the angle in my knees when seated in the driver’s seat but unfortunately the seat was all the way back against the harness bar so I moved the bar back five inches towards the rear firewall. This allowed me to move the seat to a more comfortable position. Unfortunately the new position requires a longer column and a different column angle. However the distance to the pedals is much better. I ordered a narrower Kirkey mini cup seat, Cableshift.com cable shifter and Speedway column. My sheet metal dashboard is ready for pick up tomorrow. I did some … Continue reading Update 11/17/2013

Update 11/3/2013

Change of direction in the chassis color—I decided to go with black. Good news is that I won’t have to repaint the rear chassis because it’s already black. Last week I assembled the front suspension with the Howe ball joints and moved the battery box so that the coolant hoses have a more direct path to the radiator. Today I started working on the interior beginning with an update to the steering column mounting. The fiberglass dashboard is on the way from Florida. Continue reading Update 11/3/2013

Update 10/15/13

I finished sheet metal work on the front firewall and sealed all the seams. I am waiting for the POR15 WhiteCote to arrive to paint the front firewall and A-pillars. I received the Howe extended ball joints yesterday. They are really nice with absolutely no play—as precise as a spherical bearing with no springs or bushings to create play. I was thinking about what connections I want to run through the passenger compartment versus what I will run through the air duct that runs underneath the car. Here is what I decided. Air duct: radiator coolant, flexible power steering lines, … Continue reading Update 10/15/13

Update 10/7/13

Progress at last. I cleaned off layers of undercoating and finished contouring the front fender wells. I installed coolant tubing which runs through the central air duct under the passenger compartment. After a few minor details I can paint the front of the chassis from the A-pillars forward. I am using WhiteCote by POR-15. I will start final assembly on the front chassis, suspension, steering, brakes, radiator, etc, as soon as the chassis is painted. Continue reading Update 10/7/13

Update 8/6/13

I stripped all the parts off the front of the chassis so I can prime and paint forward of the passenger compartment. As you can see below, before painting I need to do final welding, cap several open tubes and do some sheet metal work where I had to cut into the inner fenders for the larger diameter tires. I am installing subframe connectors to tie the lower part of the front frame to the lower part of the rear frame so that they don’t spread apart under bending load. Its an extra precaution because the factory uni-body is made … Continue reading Update 8/6/13

Update 8/5/13

I modified the upper and lower radiator supports so that they clear the tilt hood mechanism. I started taking all the removable parts off the front of the chassis so I can prime and paint forward of the passenger compartment. There are a lot of places where I need to fully weld joints and do a little sheet metal work but all the major assemblies are mounted—brake booster, brake and clutch master cylinders, radiator, battery, fuel tank and steering. I started counting up the connections that need to run to the back of the car and there are LOTS. Rear … Continue reading Update 8/5/13

Update 7/25/13

I was sidetracked the last few months with some house projects and helping prepare a car for the 24 Hours of Lemons race at the Ridge Motorsports Park 7/20-7/21. Unfortunately our car was completely outclassed by teams with much more time and money invested but it was still a lot of fun. I ordered the custom flywheel, clutch kit, camshaft distributor blockoff plates and billet motor mounts from 034 Motorsports. I also ordered a 20 circuit harness from Summit Racing. My primary focus is to continue mounting the body panels but I want to spread out the purchase of remaining … Continue reading Update 7/25/13

Update 3/25/13

I redesigned the hinge and subframe for the tilt front end to work with the new body panels. I installed supporting straps and mounted the fuel cell. The front suspension stress bar will also act as the upper fuel cell retainer. I need to modify the lower radiator support because it interferes with tilt body hinge. The resulting radiator position will be more upright. I have a few more items to fabricate for the front chassis, then I’ll disassemble, finish welding and paint the front chassis. There will be a lot of lines carrying fluid between the front and rear … Continue reading Update 3/25/13
