Update 4/27/15

I finished welding the exhaust system and installed the hangers but I still need to add the two turnouts for the exhaust tips. More parts to order. I think I used the wrong collector reducer on the exhaust system. I ordered a ball socket reducer but I think I should have ordered a regular flange style reducer. I bought two of those donut exhaust gaskets but they don’t seal. I hope I don’t have to cut up the exhaust again. Everything was really straight but I’ve had to make several adjustments and now there are slight misalignments. I bought DEI … Continue reading Update 4/27/15

Update 3/4/15

The engine is installed for the last time (hopefully) using the billet 034 motorsport engine mounts and poly bushings. I plumbed the entire brake system, flared hard lines, etc, and fixed several leaks found during the bleed process. The Wilwood proportioning valve was defective and wouldn’t pass any fluid to the rear circuit. A replacement valve fixed the problem. I need to run a vacuum hose from the engine for the reservoir which provides vacuum to the brake assist booster. I mounted the Bosch fuel pump under the fuel tank and ran AN lines to/from the engine. I’m using a … Continue reading Update 3/4/15

Update 4/28/14

I changed the timing belt, painted the crankshaft dampener and a few other brackets then installed the engine into the car. I’m using 034 billet motor mounts which are substantially more precise than the spongy Audi mounts. Unfortunately when I drilled holes for the motor mounts I was using the Audi mounts for mockup and now the holes aren’t in alignment with the billet mounts. This is due to the amount flex and offset allowed by the factory rubber mounts. I will need to lift the engine again and drill new holes. I put the car up on the wheel … Continue reading Update 4/28/14

Update 4/25/14

I installed the South Bend HD clutch and flywheel assembly. I used a Luk DMF flywheel for an A4 2.8 30V application. When I first installed the flywheel it rubbed slightly on the rear main seal cover. When the flywheel was fully torqued it prevented the engine from turning. I used the thin shim which came from the rear side of the original flexplate to space out the flywheel ~.5 mm. That was enough clearance where the flywheel doesn’t rub. I bolted the engine and transmission together and installed the starter and clutch slave cylinder. Everything fits. This weekend I’ll … Continue reading Update 4/25/14

Update 4/17/14

I worked on the engine again last night and assembled it as much as I could with the painted parts. I attached that mega-bracket with the filter, cooler and alternator mount and used the billet water pipe I ordered off eBay. I’ll have to find out what torque values to use. The replacement starter fits properly so I bolted it in place. When I was installing the injector rail I noticed that once side is bent and the two middle injectors don’t seat properly. I pried up in that location to pop it loose from the manifold and it must … Continue reading Update 4/17/14
