I unboxed the Southbend HD Stage 2 clutch kit and custom flywheel I received from 034 Motorsports. Unfortunately I found that the flywheel insert does not work with my engine. The flywheel is designed for a ten bolt crank where I have a later eight bolt engine. I contacted 034 Motorsports last week and I’m waiting for them to call me back with a solution. According to Audiforums the 2.8 30V flywheel will work with my application and certainly pictures of aftermarket and LUK flywheels seem to support this. I painted the dashboard with Eastwood crackle finish black paint. I really like the finish and I hope when it fully cures that it is tough and scratch resistant. I applied two heavy coats as directed then used a hair dryer to create the crackle finish. The paint dries from the outside and even though it was dry to the touch by the next day it was soft underneath. One can did the whole dashboard. Here is an image showing the approximate position of the dashboard controls. The dash panel and gauges are loose. I’m on the fence about using the motorcycle cluster because the redline of the engine is nowhere near the indicated redline, but I can’t see a reason not to use it for initial assembly and tuning. It’s been a month since I worked on the Lancia because several other issues took priority but I accomplished a few things this week. I cut sheet metal pieces to fill in the body behind the driver’s head and the same on the passenger side. I removed the windshield to allow access to chassis bracing in the lower dashboard area and then fully welded some of the tubes that were only tack welded. I welded brackets to the roll cage on either end of the dash. I’m using zinc plated bolts to temporarily secure the dash but I’ll eventually order something nicer. I welded a reinforcing plate to the center tunnel where the original shifter was located and bolted the cable shifter to the plate. I welded a tube to the dash bar and the Speedway column slips inside. The tube has a slot and pinch bolt to secure the column. I installed the heater box—I need the defroster and heat for when I take the car on the street. I’ll weld some metal to the top of the center tunnel which is thick enough to secure the shifter box. The dash is wedged in place because I still need to weld the brackets on either end to the roll hoop. The last picture shows where the shifter cables pass through the rear firewall. The Wilwood brake pedal wasn’t a straight bolt up to the aftermarket brake servo so I bought a kit with several threaded rods and clevis parts but I figured I would still need to drill/tap and fabricate a few items. As it turns out there was a combination of parts in the kit that bolted right up to the Wilwood pedal after removing the Wilwood factory clevis. So now I have clutch and brake cylinder actuation. I trimmed the dash and set it in place to check the fit. I made a bracket for each end that will be welded to the roll cage securing the dash with dzus fasteners. The final ride height for the car will be about an inch higher than pictured below. Continue reading Update 1/2/2014
