Update 8/1/22

I fixed the squeaking/chirping sound from the serpentine belt. After installing a new tensioner and idler and still having the squeak, I ordered a 1/2″ shorter belt and that fixed it. I covered the intake side of the airbox with reflective tape where it’s near the exhaust and installed the oiled K&N filter.

The front tire has a bad leak and drops below 10 psi in <24 hours. My tire choices in a 17″ rim are somewhat limited with the 315 rears. I’d like to get Nitto NT01 tires but the fronts are sold out everywhere. Available options in a R compound are Hoosiers or Toyo R888R tires so I’ll probably get the R888R tires unless I come across a set of NT01 tires soon. The Hoosiers would be great track tires, but there is essentially no tread and they are the most expensive option.

It’s been in the mid 90’s the last week so I haven’t taken the car out. I welded a ring to each coolant tube and safety wired the T-bolt hose clamps to the ring so hoses won’t pop off, but out of caution I didn’t risk a breakdown. I’m finishing a few things, installing the rear recovery hooks to the chassis, then I’ll take the car out to do more tuning.

The VE table was too rich at low idle compared to higher load values provided by the auto-tune feature. I smoothed out the VE table idle values, adjusted the IAC valve and the idle is pretty close.

For the fuel injection I used pigtails made from the Audi OEM harness, spliced to the MS3Pro harness. I found that the Audi OEM engine wiring from the 2000’s is pretty bad and the insulation tends to disintegrate after prolonged heat exposure. Also some connectors have multiple splices, like the IAC valve where I tried different versions of the Ford valve to find one that could be controlled by the EFI software. Or extra splices where I had to lengthen a sensor wire.

I’m accumulating an assortment of coil, injector, sensor and other fuel injection connectors so I can make a splice-free EFI harness for the car. While I’m there, I’ll remove the dozen or so unused wires from the MS3Pro harness for inputs/outputs I’m not using.

I’ll record more video next time I take the car out. For now I’m staying off the freeway until I can arrange to have a friend in a chase vehicle in case there are any issues.

  1. Thanks! I wanted to have it mostly done before taking it on the street, but I’m glad I took it out sooner. It gives me a chance to fix drivability issues before the car is in paint—when it’s easier to rework something without damaging a finished part.
