Update 4/7/14

I unboxed the Southbend HD Stage 2 clutch kit and custom flywheel I received from 034 Motorsports. Unfortunately I found that the flywheel insert does not work with my engine. The flywheel is designed for a ten bolt crank where I have a later eight bolt engine. I contacted 034 Motorsports last week and I’m waiting for them to call me back with a solution. According to Audiforums the 2.8 30V flywheel will work with my application and certainly pictures of aftermarket and LUK flywheels seem to support this. Also the starter I bought from eBay is from a later 4.2 engine so I ordered the proper starter for my engine.

I tried to clean off all the oxidation on the engine so it was pristine. I scrubbed the engine and brushed it extensively with a stainless brush but the spotting and stains from the years just won’t come off so I settled for a thorough detail. I’m still planning to paint the valve covers but I’m not going to tear it down any further to try and clean discolored aluminum.

I ordered a timing belt and other miscellaneous replacement parts from ECS Tuning so that when the flywheel/clutch problem is sorted I can install the engine in the car ready to go.
